Make Your Own Stretchy

If you read our story, you'll know that our tents are flipping awesome, but not the most complex thing to make. We're a crew of people motivated by making people happy and cool rather than profit, so if you want to try to make your own Stretchy tent, we really don't mind. But if it seems like too much hassle to make your own, then we'd love you to buy one of our lekker Stretchy tents*.

To make a tent you will need:

  • Stretchy fabric x 15 meters(ish)

  • Webbing (a decent width) x 4 meters(ish)

  • A sewing machine and some cotton thread

  • Someone who knows how a sewing machine works, preferably a mum.

  • A 25-30 meter rope

  • Four bits of rebar as stakes

  • 8 tennis balls

  • Four 2.8 meter latte poles (or equivalent)

Basic Instructions:

  1. A bolt of fabric is usually 1.5 meters across, so for a roughly 5 meter square tent, you'll need to cut your fabric into three bits.

  2. Sew the three bits together to make a big square.

  3. Be careful when sewing with stretchy material, as it's a nightmare to get a straight line. Don't be too hard on yourself if the seams are a bit wonky.

  4. Edging the fabric looks great but isn't necessary.

  5. Cut your webbing into small strips that will form the loops.

  6. We like adding a loop every meter or so, but you can have as many as you want. More loops = more grip

  7. Sew on the loops using a square with a cross in it for durability

  8. Thread your ropes through, bang in a bit of rebar … Boom!

*If you do make your own Stretchy tent and discover that it's super easy and cheap, please keep it to yourself and don't open up a Stretcheeeeez business. Pretty please.
